Before you click the green compile button after opening a new file, click File and Save As from the top TeXworks menu to give the file your own name. This can be troublesome when you use a template *.tex file your instructor gives you. Warning: Every time you click the green compile button, TeXworks will save the file with the last name it was given. If the document looks OK, MiKTeX is working!

After you save a file a new window should open up with a PDF file containing your document.
